NSW Desexing Laws: What Pet Owners Need to Know in 2025

NSW Desexing Laws: What Pet Owners Need to Know in 2025 Christmas team operating at Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital

Did you know that desexing laws for pets in NSW have changed? Here are the new guidelines and a special offer from Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital, for your young dog or cat.

Dogs must be desexed and registered by 6 months of age. Cats must be desexed and registered by 4 months of age. Once your pet is desexed, you will receive a desexing certificate which entitles you to a discount on Council pet registration and you won’t have to pay annual permit fees. Delaying past these age limits will result in higher Council registration fees. There are some exemptions and you’ll find further information at the NSW Government Pet Registry website or call Mulberry Lane Vet on phone: 6360 3071.

Dr Luci and her team are passionate about the wellbeing of pets! They want to protect animals from the tragic life of being neglected or abandoned. Feral cats and dogs lead tough lonely lives, cause problems for farmers and decimate our precious birds and wildlife. We can all prevent unwanted pets from being born by making sure that our pets are desexed (neutered) early in their lives.

This is an important step, and one which can have a big effect on pet health and behaviour. Desexed pets are less likely to be aggressive or territorial – they won’t wander off looking for a mate and are less likely to get injured in fights with other cats or dogs. Once your pet is desexed, they are less likely to suffer from some types of cancer or uterine infections. Desexing is ideally carried out early in your pet’s life along with vaccinations, worming and microchipping to make sure that your pet is protected and can always be returned home if he or she is lost.

In January, Mulberry Lane Vet Hospital is offering 10% discount off desexing of cats and dogs, if the operation is carried out by 6 months for dogs and 4 months for cats. The usual high standards of care apply – IV fluids during the procedure and pain relief for your pet.

Note: One offer per household, January 2025 only, must be carried out by the correct time limits – 6 months for dogs and 4 months for cats. There are some exemptions to the new legislation. See the links provided for more information.
