Creative Summer Adventures: It’s workshop time!

Creative Summer Adventures: It’s workshop time!

How about a hands-on workshop to keep the kids busy this summer? In part three of our special coverage we look at what to book in for now.

In Forbes head down to the Forbes Youth and Community Centre for a Cultural Art Creations workshop and BBQ in partnership with Yoorana Gunya Family Healing Centre Aboriginal Corporation and Binaal Billa FVPLS. Monday 20 December 10 am – 1pm. Free but bookings required.

At Orange City Library make decorations, gift tags, wrapping paper and more in the Christmas Craft workshop Monday 20 December 9am-12.30pm. Also sign up for their Summer Reading Club.

Into January and it’s magic.

The Trace of Magic – Kids Magic Show & Workshop brings a one-hour magic show followed by an hour long magic workshop where kids (and adults) can learn some magic of their own to take home to family and friends. Coming to Cowra Services Club Monday 10 January at 2pm and at Club Mudgee Saturday 15 January, 2.30-4.30pm.

In Mudgee, Mid-Western Regional Council Library’s Wizard of Oz themed program (Jan 17-28) is sure to delight and entertain with various art and crafts, and movie afternoons. Make a tinman from recycled tins, create a flowerpot scarecrow, design a hot air balloon with buttons, and much more.

Museums and galleries are GREAT places to spend time with kids – and over summer they can get hands-on using the exhibitions as inspiration.

Bathurst Rail Museum (an excellent choice of destination all holidays) run a Kids Craft Day (Tuesday 21 December) as part of their 12 Days of Christmas events.

Orange Regional Museum’s current exhibition ‘CHILD’S PLAY: GROWING UP IN ORANGE IN THE 1950S AND 1960s’ takes us back to childhoods of the 1950s and 60s. It’s the PERECT “Back in my day…” conversation starter! Join their Family Tour of Child’s Play (Mon 17 January, 10am – 11.30am) to listen to some of the fabulous stories behind the images, play some favourite schoolyard games and then explore the exhibition in a scavenger hunt.

There’s a return of the popular  Making Headlines workshop at Orange Regional Museum, also linked to the Child’s Play exhibition (Tuesday 18 January, 10am-11.30am and again 1pm). Experiment with transfers, stamps, collage and stencils and create your own front page featuring photographs taken 70 years ago for the Central Western Daily; plus Pinball Wizards, where you sign and build your own pinball game out of cardboard and other found materials (Wednesday 19 January 10am-12noon); or Busy Badges (Monday 24 January 1am-11.30am) making badges inspired by the Scouts. Bookings required for all the ORM workshops.

At Cowra Regional Art Gallery entries are now open for the Young Archie competition. Young artists between the ages of five and 18 are encouraged to paint a portrait of someone special to them and submit an entry. The Young Archie competition is open to residents of the Cowra, Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Orange, Weddin and Hilltops LGAs. This is all part of the 2021 Archibald Prize Regional Tour that will be on display at Cowra Regional Art Gallery from Saturday 19 March until Sunday 1 May 2022.

To skill up for portrait painting Cowra Regional Art Gallery’s summer workshops will be FREE Young Archie Portraiture Workshops. With guidance from Gallery staff, participants will create a portrait. They run every Thursday in January 10am-12pm (ages 5 to 12) and every Thursday in January 1pm-3pm (ages 13-18). Bookings required.

Bathurst Library will run activities from January 11-20 including painting, crafts, beading and more.
